The Son of Man must be lifted up

the Book of John 12:34-50

34 The crowd spoke up. “The Law tells us that the Christ will remain forever,” they said. “So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light. Do this before darkness catches up with you. Anyone who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, put your trust in it. Then you can become sons of light.”

When Jesus had finished speaking, he left and hid from them.

39 But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said,

40 “The Lord has blinded their eyes

    and hardened their hearts—

so that their eyes cannot see,

    and their hearts cannot understand,

and they cannot turn to me

    and have me heal them.”

41 Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah’s glory. 42 Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. 43 For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

44 Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me. 45 For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me. 46 I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. 47 I will not judge those who hear me but don’t obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it. 48 But all who reject me and my message will be judged on the day of judgment by the truth I have spoken. 49 I don’t speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it. 50 And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say.”

Każdy, kto chodzi w ciemności, nie wie, dokąd idzie. 36 Póki macie światłość, zaufajcie jej, a wtedy staniecie się synami światłości”. Gdy Jezus skończył mówić, odszedł i ukrył się przed nimi. 39 Lecz ludzie nie mogli uwierzyć, bo jak powiedział również Izajasz: 40 „Pan zaślepił ich oczy, i zatwardził ich serca, aby ich oczy nie widziały, i ich serca nie rozumiały, i nie mogli się nawrócić do mnie, i abym ich uzdrowił”. 41 Izajasz miał na myśli Jezusa, gdy to mówił, ponieważ widział przyszłość i mówił o chwale Mesjasza. 42 Wielu ludzi jednak w niego uwierzyło, w tym niektórzy przywódcy żydowscy. Ale nie przyznawali się do tego z obawy, że faryzeusze wyrzucą ich z synagogi. 43 Bo bardziej umiłowali chwałę ludzką niż chwałę Bożą. 44 Jezus zawołał do tłumów: „Jeśli mi wierzycie, to nie tylko mnie ufacie, ale i Bogu, który mnie posłał. 45 Bo gdy mnie widzicie, widzicie tego, który mnie posłał. 46 Przyszedłem jako światłość, aby świecić w tym ciemnym świecie, aby wszyscy, którzy we mnie pokładają ufność, nie pozostawali już w ciemności. 47 Nie będę sądził tych, którzy mnie słuchają, lecz mnie nie słuchają, bo przyszedłem, aby zbawić świat, a nie, aby go sądzić. 48 Ale wszyscy, którzy odrzucają mnie i moje słowo, będą sądzeni w dniu sądu według prawdy, którą powiedziałem. 49 Nie mówię od siebie.
